This taught me some things, and I've read pretty widely. The author occasionally drifts into an anecdote about his career as a firemen and paramedic which is equally amusing. At first I thought I could ignore them even though there were 5 to 10 per page. Good book, especially if you love the Mississippi.. Trained as a biologist with substantial expertise in ecology and epidemiology, Lockwood combines these gifts, along with a sound understanding of history and his exceptional writing, in weaving together a most beguiling narrative that reads more like a Cold War spy thriller than a superb piece of nonfiction. All the recipes I have tried so far have been great.. It belongs in a conversation with other forces that helped to forge American identity: the endless frontier, immigration, democracy, religion, slavery and its legacy, the struggle for labor rights, the expansion of civil rights, and free market and state capitalism."
