Fluid Mechanics: A Short Course for Physicists

Aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, the book assumes no prior knowledge of the subject and only a basic understanding of vector calculus and analysis. The multidisciplinary field of fluid mechanics is one of the most actively developing fields of physics, mathematics and engineering. It contains 32 exercises of varying difficulties, from simple estimates to elaborate calculations, with detailed solutions to help readers understand fluid mechanics.. It teaches the art of fluid-mechanical estimates and shows how the ideas and methods developed to study the mechanics of fluids are used to analyze other systems with many degrees of freedom in statistical physics and field theory. Using examples taken from everyday life, from hydraulic jumps in a kitchen sink to Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in clouds, the book provides readers with a better understanding of the world around them. In this book, the fundamental ideas of fluid mechanics are presented from a physics perspective

The writing is excellent with even his wide ranging quotes well chosen and inserted without the usual smug pretentiousness. His words on hyphenated Americans, trusts, Cuban, Panamanian and Philippine policies, organized labor, stay at home moms, conservation, muckrakers, lynchings and a host of other issues are all laid out in this book. Because it is all true. Often a work not detailed in this book (the first of a four-volume catalogue raisonnee) is referred to for comparison, but is not illustrated, or is shown in a postage-stamp size picture (example: a lot is told about the models for Carnation Lily Lily Rose, but the repro itself is about 1" square, and impossible to see in detail. I'm sure a lot of people are going to get hung up on some offhand sexist comments or the dirt thrown at Facebook's execs (and I'm sure that Martinez could have avoided both while keeping the book interesting). It comes off very authentically. Best of all it describes how the advertising media really operates, going back to the dawn of it, and how Facebook, Google, et al are merely e
