There is even one image that the woman's dark hair falls into the flat black as welljust a floating face. The resulting engines were marvels of mechanical ingenuity combined with some really dumb design decisions. Often a work not detailed in this book (the first of a four-volume catalogue raisonnee) is referred to for comparison, but is not illustrated, or is shown in a postage-stamp size picture (example: a lot is told about the models for Carnation Lily Lily Rose, but the repro itself is about 1" square, and impossible to see in detail. For the most part, this is a magnificent compilation of all the portraits Sargent did until 1889. But for the most part this is a gorgeous book, indispensible for those of us still caught up in Sargentolatry, and just whets the appetite for the next volume.. while it is possible that i missed this detail in the posting on amazon, however it should have been stressed more than it was, if at all. I love Sargent's backgrounds to his portraits, and on so many of the images, it's just flat black (his tonal depth is lost). A lot has been written about the original Wright flyers, but relatively little about the engines that powered. A well written book, but it falls short of 5 stars because it does not include the schematic drawings which would be a tremendous aid in interpreting the written material.. Not all im
