Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box

"Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box" is NOT intended to be a "install, configure, update, troubleshoot, and defend book." It is also NOT another one of the countless Hacker books out there. This book portrays the "street fighting" tactics used to attack networks and systems. World-renowned network security personalities present a series of 25 to 30 page chapters written from the point of an attacker who is gaining access to a particular system. So, what IS it? It is an edgy, provocative, attack-oriented series of chapters written in a first hand, conversational style. Not just another "hacker" book, it plays on "edgy" market success of Steal this Computer Book with first hand, eyewitness accountsA highly provocative expose of advanced security exploitsWritten by some of the most high profile "White Hats", "Black Hats" and "Gray Hats"Gives readers a "first ever" look inside some of the most notorious network intrusions

One can read this book for entertainment, though its writing falls well short of cyberpunk classics like Burning Chrome and Snow Crash. Consider this book, with its plentiful detail, the answer to every pretty but functionally half-baked user interface ever shown in a feature film. Alternately, you can just enjoy the extra realism that the detail adds to these stories of packetized adventure. The specific detail may open your eyes to weaknesses in your own systems (or give you some ideas for, ahem, looking around on the network). It's a series of short stories about characters who gain unauthorized access to equipment and information, or deny use of those resources to the people who are meant to have access to them. Its value is in its explicit references to current technologies--Cisco routers, OpenSSH, Windows 2000--and specific techniques for hacking them (the heroes and heroines of this book are always generous with command-history dumps)

He read this story when he was a child and remembered how absurd it can get when one deals with bureaucrats.. That picture is useful in making an abstraction feel more like a concrete threat.I think this would be a good intro for a non-technical manager of security staff who needs to know why we have to worry about these things. So I'll keep it and enjoy the reading.. By the title I thought they might be similar but nope. This taught me some things, and I've read pretty widely. The data with which it backs it all up. Thompson-esque ruminations about life, capitalism, and everything. You will either love or hate Martinez's voice (I found myself doing both at different parts of the book). I'm sure a lot of people are going to get hung up on some offhand sexist comments or the dirt thrown at Facebook's execs (and I'm sure that Martinez could have avoided both while keeping the book interesting). It gives the security administrator a good view of what is possible. Antonio Garcia Martinez captures it all perfectly. That's only the last half of the book. The rest is a tale of escaping from startup hell, making a go at reaching startup heaven, then making deals to salvage it all when reaching the critical trial-by-fire that every startup must face: die, execute flawlessly, or exit. There are some who will find the tone, the voice, or the political incorrectness of both to be too harsh to digest.
